Project Brief
- Name the project and its purpose in one sentence
- Note any hard deadlines (event, gift, season)
- Decide: skill-building project or reliable repeat?
- Write down the pattern name or style reference
Pattern Review
- Read the full pattern instructions start to finish
- Check recommended fabric types (weight, drape, stretch)
- Write down yardage needed for your size and view
- List every notion: zipper, buttons, interfacing, elastic, etc.
- Flag unfamiliar techniques to research or practice
Fabric Matching
- Compare your fabric to pattern recommendations
- Check yardage, width, and weight match
- Shop your stash first — do you already own something suitable?
- Confirm opacity, drape, and stretch recovery are right
- Account for pattern matching, nap, or directional prints
Supply Check
- Lay out all fabric, lining, and interfacing
- Confirm thread color and type
- Check closures are the correct size
- Pre-wash and press fabric if care instructions require it
- Test machine tension on a scrap of the actual fabric
- Print or trace pattern pieces in the right size
Session Planning
- Estimate total project time based on your real pace
- Break into sessions: cutting, main seams, details, finishing
- Schedule sessions in your calendar or planner
- Note where you left off after each session
